1882: The first Chinese Exclusion Act, prohibiting the entry of Chinese laborers for ten years, was enacted. Successive acts extended the exclusion; all of them were repealed in 1943.

1869: The transcontinental railroad in North America became a reality when the tracks of the Union Pacific joined those of the Central Pacific at Promontory, Utah. Chinese workers constituted 80% of the Central Pacific labor force at the height of its construction.

1954: The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a unanimous opinion in the case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, ruling that separate education facilities are inherently unequal and that racial segregation violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
